Abolitionists Rising: A Call to End the Atrocity of Abortion in Connecticut

Good afternoon, my name is Norman Patterson. I am the head, director, and founder of the Connecticut Foundation to Abolish Abortion. Today, I want to address the grave sin of abortion and the urgent need for abolition in the state of Connecticut.

Just as abolitionists like Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, and Prudence Crandall stood uncompromisingly against the evil of slavery, I stand here today as a modern abolitionist—a Christian abolitionist—declaring that abortion must be abolished. The abolitionists of old faced persecution and mockery, but they never wavered in their conviction that slavery must end. Today, we carry forward that same spirit as we fight for the equal protection and justice for innocent babies in the womb.

In slavery times, legislation like the Dred Scott decision denied the humanity of slaves, allowing the law to perpetuate barbaric injustices. Abolitionists confronted this evil with unyielding courage, declaring that all human beings are made in the image of God and deserving of equal rights. Likewise, abortion is rooted in the same barbaric philosophy: a denial of the humanity of unborn children. Just as history looks back in horror at the atrocities of slavery and the Holocaust, future generations will judge us for the legalized slaughter of innocent human beings in the womb.

In the 21st century, we should have settled the matter of human rights, but we have not. Our society arbitrarily decides who is considered human based on size, location, and stage of development. This shifting, humanistic philosophy—the same one that fueled the evils of slavery and the Holocaust—continues to blind our nation to the truth that all human beings, including those in the womb, are created in the image of God and deserve equal justice under the law.

The pro-life movement, while well-meaning, has failed to address this evil adequately. Pro-life strategies often regulate abortion rather than abolish it, allowing the sin of child sacrifice to persist under the guise of incremental change. During slavery, incremental approaches merely perpetuated the institution, and today, the regulation of abortion does the same. Evil must not be regulated; it must be eradicated.

Abortion is not merely a social issue—it is child sacrifice. Whenever a child is killed for the perceived benefit of another, it is an act of sacrifice. Whether for convenience, shame, or financial hardship, the reasoning does not change the reality of what abortion is. Proverbs 24:11-12 calls us to “deliver those who are drawn unto death,” and Proverbs 31:8-9 commands us to “open our mouths for the speechless.” Silence is complicity. Complacency is complicity. The Church’s failure to act makes it an abortion church rather than an abolition church.

Francis Schaeffer, a renowned Christian apologist, once said, “Every abortion clinic should have a sign out front that says, ‘Open by permission of the Church.’” This statement rings true for Connecticut, where the apathy of pastors and Christians has allowed abortion to continue unabated. Pastors during slavery and the Holocaust failed to act boldly, and history judges them for their inaction. The same will be true for those who remain silent on abortion today.

Romans 13 teaches that governments are instituted by God to punish evil and promote good. However, our government has failed to fulfill this role. Good and evil cannot be defined arbitrarily by legislators, courts, or popular opinion. Truth and morality must be grounded in the objective, unchanging revelation of God’s Word. Without this foundation, we end up with laws that dehumanize and destroy the most vulnerable among us.

From the moment of fertilization, a new human life is formed—scientifically, theologically, and rationally. Yet Connecticut and the United States continue to allow the wholesale slaughter of these innocent lives. Since 1973, over 100 million babies have been legally killed in America, far exceeding the death tolls of the Holocaust, Stalin’s purges, and Mao’s regime combined. This is a tragedy of unspeakable proportions, and it demands immediate action.

The Connecticut Foundation to Abolish Abortion calls for the complete and uncompromising abolition of abortion. We reject incrementalism and demand equal protection and justice for all human beings. Our goal is to pass an abolition bill in Connecticut that recognizes the humanity of the unborn and criminalizes their destruction.

Pastors, Christians, and churches, I implore you to join this fight. History will judge us, and more importantly, God will judge us. We will stand before Him as individuals, as churches, as states, and as nations. Will you be counted among those who remained silent, or will you stand boldly for truth and justice? The blood of these innocent children cries out for justice, and their blood will be on our hands if we fail to act.

Abolitionists are rising again, just as they did during slavery. The fight will not be easy, and it may take decades, but we must begin now. Abortion will be abolished, and when it is, may we be found on the right side of history and in obedience to God.
